Idea #8: Make IdeaTorrent standalone

Written by Caglow the 16 May 09 at 21:23. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I'd like for IdeaTorrent to become a standalone script which does not require anything else to run. This might take some time, yes, but I think it would expand the userbase exponentially once done.

Solution #1: Code the Essential Parts
Written by Caglow the 16 May 09 at 21:23.
Write code for the essential parts the program does not already have including those which perform database connections, etc...anything that Drupal does that IdeaTorrent needs.

Solution #2: Use Drupal to Make Idea Torrent Robust
Written by philbar the 19 May 09 at 21:41.
If it's not broken, don't fix it. Recoding what Drupal already does is just a waste of time.

In fact, other Drupal modules should be leveraged to make Idea Torrent more robust such as VotingAPI.

If for no other reason, do you really want to create your own theming engine?

Solution #3: Use Drupal to make it look like it's standalone
Written by jgreep the 30 Sep 09 at 21:21.
Use Drupal as the core, but make it appear within a single region, with that region being the only thing visible on the page.

I don't see why it needs to be part of drupal, as a standalone item it can do much better as there is no drupal requirement.

Agree...if it wasn't part of Drupal, I'd be using it by now.

I am confused why Drupal is a blocker? Is it that you want to incorporate it into your own code? Drupal is very easy to set up and maintain and is becoming more and more like a framework than a CMS. I don't think ideatorrent would have been made at all if it was made from scratch because it would be much more work. Being able to leverage the existing code from Drupal and all it's modules is what made ideatorrent possible.

Well, the problem is, I don't use Drupal. My site runs on a different platform. Installing Drupal just to install IdeaTorrent seems a bit weird considering that I wouldn't be using anything else in Drupal. To me, Drupal is just....big. And since only the core of it is being used, I don't think it should be too hard to just extract that and make it run without Drupal like those other suggestions say. Currently, I'm running it as I described before but I think it would be nice to cut down the size of the files by a LOT. I can see how Drupal helped with the creation of IdeaTorrent but usually, after a while, on projects like Aptana Studio (created from Eclipse), they usually have 2 different releases, one as a plugin, and one as a separate, standalone release. Doing so, I would expect many more people to use the script.

To clarify, I've installed Drupal between the time of the previous post and now.

When this paper was first published in 2003, business analysis was just starting to emerge as a distinct profession in its own right. Prior to this the role was often performed by the systems analyst who would carry out both the ccde analysis and the design on a new system or enhancement. This often meant that a “problem” was made to fit the “solution”. The transition from telling the client what they would be getting - versus analysing their problems and recommending solutions – was still a new one for many organisations.
