Idea #5: Donate via PayPal to up your idea

Written by thom.mp the 10 Apr 09 at 04:26. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
This will allow for all sorts of new business models in open source. You can literally buy influence over certain open source projects. So if a company really wants a certain feature, they pay the developers to implement that idea over others. This would definitely not be for every project, but for some, it would be a godsend of a revenue stream. This is a really radical idea so please discuss.

Solution #1: PayPal integration

Allow users to pay a cent for a vote. This feature will obviously be optional, and can be turned off at different levels. (It's not used at all, it's used but the ideas are in a different pool from the non-commercial ones, it's used but the user controls whether or not they view commercial and non-commercial ideas together, etc.)

I like part of this idea. I like that this could somehow qualifies the voters as having some basic level of competency and makes the votes a bit more valid.

I haven't played with Ideatorrent yet because my host doesn't support postgresql so maybe ideatorent already has some measures in.

In the long run, vote authenticity is huge!

I personally would not use it. However, I can see how it may be useful for those lacking funds. Still, I'm not sure how well it will do as a core feature. Perhaps make it a plugin?

This is a really nice idea, but I think it needs some tweaking. One cent is far too low for a vote.

Even if people don't go around stuffing ballots, the transaction fees will consume more than the amount of money sent.

A dollar per vote (or a configurable price) would be more appropriate. You would really need to find a balance between the value of an unpaid vote vs. a paid vote. As Caglow pointed out, this balance would vary from developer to developer.
